outline: curriculum and assessment in the city

This series of workshops aims to stimulate ideas regarding the use of urban spaces for imagining and living curriculum and assessment. Throughout the semester we will consider how knowledge boundaries are created, produced and reproduced by making and breaking the boundaries of on-campus spaces with online spaces and the spaces of the City of Melbourne. In relation to this, we will be asking questions such as:

- what has traditionally counted as inside/outside knowledge in education?

- who decides this? why and how is this decided? who benefits? who loses? who is included/excluded?

- where does the ‘real’ world begin/end? what does this have to do with the concept of ‘authenticity’ in pedagogy?

We will engage in three cycles of curriculum development whilst simultaneously producing work for our own assessment within the class. Various assessment models and concepts will be explored through ongoing application to our own work. The structure will be iterative and increasing levels of independent work will be expected as the semester proceeds.
